Shiny, gripping techno forms clear, straight lines, while scratchy acoustic guitars scrape up the edges and create ghostly sounds. The tracks could not be more different. Some are underpinned by little more than a metronomic kick drum and a robotic voice, others are deeply immersed in a layer of melody and euphoric noise – and yet are unmistakably and uniquely Underworld. An album in the traditional sense, which you listen to spellbound from start to finish. So we gladly comply with the request of the two Underworld makers: “Please don’t shuffle.” A sacrilege.
In the thirty years that have passed since their groundbreaking debut “dubnobasswithmyheadman”, the band has cemented its reputation as one of the most innovative and important electronic bands of all time, constantly pushing creative boundaries, redefining genres and refusing to stand still. Last year alone, Underworld played live in front of more than half a million people worldwide. The new album “Strawberry Hotel” will be released on October 25, 2024 on CD and vinyl.
